Da Vinci The Exhibition is a hands-on exploration of Leonardo da Vinci’s life, research, and art, developed by Aurea Exhibitions and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc. Guests can go beyond the canvas, exploring over 65 life-size inventions, more than 20 fine art studies, and captivating displays.
Through this window is a home
In an assemblage of images, colours and scents, Harvey Nichol and Michaela Bridgemohan examine the Peacock Chair as a source of conceptual inspiration. “Through this window is a home” takes notice of the ways in which colonialism shrouds non-European cultures as mythic and/or non-existent.
Pilot Astronauts
Between the 1970s and 1990s, the term astronaut families referred to family arrangements in Asia where the fathers remained in their home country to work while the mothers migrated to the west. Pilot Astronauts by Raeann Kit-Yee Cheung celebrates the early astronaut mothers, their strength, and their humanity.
Anton Ginzburg: Surface
Anton Ginzburg: Surface is a reflection on the use of technology as it relates to cultural labour, data aesthetics and machine learning. The three bodies of work deliberate on surfaces that range from the architectural to the digital screen and beyond, and are relevant to conversations around AI.
22nd Annual Members Exhibition
Leighton Art Centre celebrates the incredible talent and creativity of their member artists. This year’s exhibition is a virtual ‘square foot show’, featuring over 100 works that are small in size and big on artistry! Most works featured in this exhibition are available for online purchase.
Spotlight: Linda Duthie
Join the Alberta Craft Calgary Gallery for their newest Spotlight exhibition by Linda Duthie. Through form and function Linda Duthie creates a pottery driven by the tactile experience. Feel the weight of the cup, the grip of the unglazed clay. Her earthy designs reveal her deep love of the natural world.
Ornament & Crime
Ornament & Crime celebrates adorned, decorated, patterned and ornamented excess. 45 artists from across Canada are featured in this hyperbolic spectacle of exaggerated adornment with all the delightful trimmings they can muster. Check out their bedecked, festooned, and fabulous works!
Nonsuch
Nonsuch by Morgan Melenka employs commercially printed materials — mesh banners and Formica — to discuss the logic of North American built environments, history and imagined histories. Check it out at Leighton Art Centre! Exhibition Reception on April 13, 2024, 1 – 4pm.
Kewanee Street
This exhibition explores the affinities and connections between the hilltop artistic communities of Kewanee Street and Leighton Art Centre. It is a two person show featuring Malcolm Mooney and Doyle Lane who were neighbours in the ’80s and both lived on Kewanee Street in Los Angeles.
Building Black Civilizations
In this exhibition, artist Ekow Nimako explores what might have been when ruler Abu Bakr II chose to abdicate his throne and set out across the Atlantic. Using LEGO® to recreate epic possibilities, Nimako creates a narrative of Black civilizations and imagines liberated futures.
Curious Nature
Curious Nature expands on the intersectionality of the feminine form within landscapes, both real and imagined. The exhibition features Truong’s characteristic dioramas alongside new sculptural forms, stop-motion animations and a site-specific ephemeral wall installation.
The Ballad of Georges Boivin
After the loss of his wife, Georges Boivin decides that life must continue. With his three friends, he sets out on a cross-country road trip, in search of his first love. This poetic and playful script is a tour de force for the solo actor who plays all four friends.
Lodestone
Lodestone exhibits our complex encounters with medicine in way that is inviting, wonderous, and enchanting. Lodestones are naturally occurring magnets, a near-magical phenomenon that was eventually harnessed within biomedical imaging technologies like MRI machines.
HSCA Flea Market
The HSCA Flea Market has been a community program since 1985, running year-round. Bring the family and browse the flea market with over 100 vendors, featuring crafts, furniture, antiques, books, household items, and more! Plus an art sale taking place once a month.
Buy Me A Drink, Joe
Since premiering, Forte Musical Theatre has produced 29 shows, won 25 awards, and entertained tens of thousands of patrons. Join them for a new musical celebrating 15 years of his songs that tell the story of how a guy from Calgary fell in love with musical theatre.
Party Time
This over-the-top performance choreographed by Kimberley Cooper features a live band. This piece is a surreal look at a house party, a deep dive into the psyche of the guests, and promises wildness, hilarity and incredible dancing and music. Get your tickets!
Outside Mullingar
A poetic romance set in rural Ireland about neighbours stuck in a land feud. Anthony and Rosemary grew up on adjacent farms and are now on the brink of catastrophe as they fight back despair and stubborn follies to unearth the magic of finding their hearts’ true home.
FascinAsian Film Festival
The FascinAsian Film Festival premieres during Asian Heritage Month showcasing Asian contributions to film and media. This Festival platforms both emerging filmmakers and seasoned professionals. Beyond the films, they also offer cultural experiences including performances and food. Don’t miss it!
Sasquatch Sally
Calgary Young People’s Theatre combines folklore, familial drama and just a tiny sprinkle of summer camp shenanigans, this theatrical tale is as unique as a sasquatch! In the summertime, some kids choose to stick close to family, others craft new memories with their cabin roommates, while some find themselves making friends with the impossible.
Calgary Artists Studio Tour
This year the tour has expanded to over 80 local artists participating across our beautiful city and surrounding areas. This is a self-guided tour where you get to meet each artist in their home or shared studio space, and you can plan your visit at your own pace.
